Contact address The Eastern Institute was founded by Hajime Nakamura(b. Nov.,1912, d. Oct..10,1999, age86) through the study committee he formed originally for the compilation of a dictionary of Buddhist terms, and with the eventual aim to spread the study and results of such study of Eastern thought. It was formally established as a nonprofit institute in 1970, and the Eastern Academy (Toho Gakuin) was opened in 1973. With lectures on Eastern thought and culture, and annual publication of the TOHO journal, the Institute has achieved to date a thirty-year academic record.
The present officers are: Director, Rakuko Nakamura; Executive Secretary, Sengaku Mayeda; Principal of the Eastern Academy, Sengaku Mayeda. The Eastern Academy and study course --Founder Prof.Hajime Nakamura's Message: Toho Gakuin was opened for the restoration of human integrity, under the auspices of The Eastern Institute. It is a cooperative body and alliance formed of individual scholars who endorse the ideals of this school and of students who aspire to study with such scholars. It aims to be a place of individual and cooperate guidance. --Distinctive characteristics of the school: Toho Gakuin has endeavored to be a place of learning for individuals who seek the way of life through the pursuit of true scholarship, following the principles of the school. a. Age, sex, occupation, nationality, academic background will not be questioned.
b. Learning will be free of the boundaries of academic specialties, and all students may expand their knowledge with freedom.
c. Cordial and careful instruction is encouraged to establish a close teacher-student relationship, which also makes possible a long and lasting cooperative relationship among members of the school.
d. As teachers provide guidance in the spirit of service, students may pursue certain studies with far greater depth than is possible in any other university in Japan.
e. Courses and themes not offered in traditional universities may be pursued through the original lecturing and practical training methods implemented.
f. Enthusiasm is the most important ingredient of scholarship. Any person with the enthusiasm for learning may enter Toho Gakuin. Persons studying at Toho Gakuin will be designated as "kenkyu-kaiin". Schooling is also conducted at the Kansai District, Nagoya District, Kagawa District and Okayama District Classrooms. In addition to the Toho Gakuin Summer Lectures, Kitakami-kahan Summer Lectures and Counseling sessions held during the summer, Toho Gakuin also cooperative with the Buddhist University Symposium sponsored by the Minami-nagano Buddhist Association of Nagano City.
Application procedure for matriculation
- Apply at the administration office for a copy of the "Guide for Admissions" with the application form enclosed.
- Mail, through the Japanese Post Office, the application form by March 31 to:

- An interview will take place from 5:00 p.m., April 9, after which matriculation notification will be sent to the applicant through the mail.
- Payment of fees should be made in April, upon receipt of matriculation notification, through the Japanese Post Office to:

- Tuition and fees:
For the new student, entry fee of \35,000, plus \40,000 per course.
For the continuing student, processing fee of \25,000, plus \40,000 per course.
Educational material, such as texts, will be charged separately according to class needs.
Course fees may be remitted in two payments, in April and in September. See "Guide for Admissions" for details.
The TOHO journal The TOHO, an annual journal for studies in Eastern thought and culture, was begun in 1985 by Prof.Hajime Nakamura in recognition of the dire need of students without formal affiliation with academic or professional organizations for a place to publish. The recent issue, No.15(Fall, 2000), is a special edition in memory of Professor Nakamura, containing his chronology, bibliography of publications in various languages besides Japanese, the lectures given at the Kamakura Summer Symposium on Religion, and papers on individual studies.
